Yep. I said it. Newborn babies should breastfeed 8–12 times per day (minimum!). Here’s the catch. Babies nurse for a variety of reasons that don’t involve hunger so they may feel like they are always “on you”. Breast milk is easily digested, so newborns are hungry often. Frequent feedings helps stimulate your milk production during the first few weeks. Some babies may feed as often as every hour at times (usually in the late afternoon early evening time). This is called cluster feeding followed by a longer sleep interval of 4 to 5 hours. A 2 week old baby can comfortably drink 2 to 3 ounces at a time on average. By the time your baby is 1–2 months old, they probably will nurse 7–9 times a day and take in approximately 2-5 oz every 2-4 hrs meaning approx 25-30 oz per day. But my experience is that nutritive sucking (actually feeding for milk) will be every few hours but the amount of times they are at your chest/breast could be 20+ times; especially in toddlerhood when reassurance and comfort are needed throughout the day for seconds and minutes at a time. Just say No (To visitors) Having a new baby means learning how to say “Nope, thanks we’re good” “I’m not ready for people to come by” “Could you drop off food or coffee instead?” “I’ll let you know when we want a visit” “What about we connect with you once we settle in?” If someone wants to come by and see you and your new addition, think about how comfortable you are with that person seeing you naked or close to it! I always joke if the person can’t see your breast or chest then they probably aren’t someone that should come by in the early weeks. Postpartum can be such a vulnerable time and surrounding yourself with safe people is essential. Babies need unlimited skin to skin, parents need to rest when their baby is settled. Everyone needs the time to learn about each other and learn of to feed, sleep and enjoy one another. The best way to do this is alone in bed, close together; listening and reacting to each other’s needs. The first thing parents will say to me when body feeding isn’t going well is, “I wish everyone would leave me alone so that I had time to practice”. We all need time to cry and power through without feeling like we have to entertain or put on a happy face. Consider planning ahead, and think about who you’d like a visit from in the first week or two. Ask your partner (or safe person in your life) to be a gatekeeper. Most of the time people are trying to be helpful. Having a list of jobs that they can do can sometimes help divert a lingering visitor! Things such as cleaning a toilet, making muffins, vacuuming, putting laundry away etc can ensure you’re creating the supportive environment you need while being able to bond with your baby I’m always mindful that every family functions differently but this is my 2 cents. As always do what works best for you!

In lactation work, prioritizing the well-being of the breastfeeding parent and baby is crucial. An ego can hinder effective communication and support, as it may lead to judgment or a lack of empathy. Being an effective IBCLC requires a compassionate and client-centered approach, putting the needs of the parents and baby first without personal biases. In collaborative postpartum team work, I have found that remaining a humble life long learner is key. Reminding myself to be reflective in my responses and ensuring I know how my words impacts families, is an ever evolving process. Thank you for providing feedback and encouragement while we problem solve and find solutions together. You make me better; personally and professionally.

Pinterest worthy milk stash photos can be overwhelming and very misleading. When you are planning to have others care for your baby, a milk stash certainly can provide them with the necessary breast milk for bottle feedings. However, an average milk supply will be able to store an extra 2oz or less a day in the freezer for future use. So when you see an exclusively breastfeeding parent have a freezer full of frozen milk, remember she likely has oversupply which comes with many challenges as well! If you’re returning to full-time work and your baby is going to need your milk, I recommend 24-32oz per day to meet their intake needs. On average baby will take 2-4oz every 2-4hrs. When parents come to me for advice on how to build a milk stash, I always inquire about their WHY. It matters what they need extra milk for. I ask because building a stash involves pumping and most people cannot fathom doing anything extra after caring for a baby 24/7. No need to add to the already busy day! Most people can build a small amount of extra frozen milk for future use by doing the following: 1) Add an extra pump session after your milk supply is established (usually around 4-6 weeks postpartum). Pumping after your morning feed can do the trick. 2) I recommend using milk storage bags, collecting in 2oz increments, to avoid defrosting excess milk that your baby may not take in one feeding. 3) Freeze the bags of milk while lying flat after getting rid of the extra air inside. I hope this has helped you understand why it’s not necessary to have hundreds of ounces stored up. First, focus on reaching your feeding goals and then spend time building a stash if you want one.

- Wear black - it’ll hide leaking milk stains and baby puke/drool - Try to wear something that opens or lifts up easily to allow for comfortable breastfeeding - So you’re best to not “pass the baby”. When everyone bounces and soothes a little one back to sleep we often miss hunger cues and this may lead to a hungry kiddo and sore/swollen breasts(or worse mastitis). Don’t skip feeds! - Baby wearing can be a lifesaver - You don’t need to pump and dump if you choose to have a drink or two. Dr. Jack Newman says…”Reasonable alcohol intake should not be discouraged at all. As is the case with most drugs, very little alcohol comes out in the milk. The chest feeding parent can take some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers.” - Babies are great excuses to head home early or take a break in another room. Deep breaths help a lot too! - Remember you are the parents. No need to take unsolicited advice or defend your parenting choices. - We know you are capable, but during the holidays — ask for help! Simple things like asking your partner to make a plate for you will take the pressure off - Remember not all Christmas’s will feel magical. It’s completely normal if it’s just “okay”

The truth about thrush Nipple Thrush is very over diagnosed! Most cases of sore nipples are caused by positioning, oral tension and tongue tie concerns. Within the past year I attended a Douglas College Breastfeeding day. Dr.Katrina Mitchell explained that “websites and lactation lore report yeast as “burning, itching, and stinging” with “dry and flaky skin” or a “fine white rash.” This is a spot-on description of dermatitis or eczema” She founded The Physicians Guide to Breastfeeding and as a breast surgeon, and an IBCLC who is active in the ABM as well as perinatal mental health certified, she is a wealth of experience and knowledge! She explained that thrush is not contagious.  She explains that “vaginal yeast infections also are not contagious: sexual contact with a partner does not transmit them in the way sexually transmitted infections occur, and yeast from your vagina does not cause a yeast infection on or in your breast.  Diaper rash isn’t transmissible to your breast” She goes on to explore that despite other protocols out there, she doesn’t see evidence supporting that both chest feeding parent and baby need to be treated if baby is + for thrush.  She recommends parents stop cleaning and sterilizing pump parts, infant toys, and other household items. She says that detergents may worsen allergy, which is often at the root of the chest feeding parents symptoms of burning and itching nipples. The take away? In the past year, I’ve been able to better assess nipple soreness and I have not seen one case of thrush! I’ve appropriately supported clients in healing their dermatitis, vasospasms and milk blebs with better assessment skills. Is your mind blown yet? Got Milk!? Breast milk production begins with the stimulation of mammary glands in a person’s breast, typically triggered by hormonal changes during pregnancy. After childbirth, the hormone prolactin plays a key role in initiating milk production. When a baby latches onto the breast and begins to suck, it stimulates nerve endings, signaling the release of prolactin. Prolactin prompts the alveoli, small milk-producing sacs within the mammary glands, to take nutrients from the bloodstream and convert them into milk. Meanwhile, another hormone called oxytocin is released, causing the muscles around the alveoli to contract and push the milk into milk ducts. The process of milk ejection, also known as the let-down reflex, is crucial for milk release. Some people can feel they’re let down, others can’t. Both are normal! Oxytocin is released in response to the baby's suckling or other stimuli, such as pumping or hand expressing, which causes the milk to flow through the ducts to the nipple. But be gentle expressing and massaging because some of these ducts are as delicate and as thin as a strand of hair! The composition of breast milk changes over time to adapt to the baby's evolving nutritional needs. Initially, colostrum, a thick and yellowish fluid rich in antibodies, is produced in the first few days after birth. As the baby continues to breastfeed, mature milk replaces colostrum, providing a balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals essential for the baby's growth and development. Breastmilk is shown to continue to have amazing benefits for toddlers/children. The continuous demand for milk by the baby helps maintain milk supply, and the process is finely tuned to respond to the specific requirements of both the mother and the infant. Kinda amazing right!? Ooph! The idea that parents may need a break from their baby is rooted in the understanding that caring for an infant can be physically and emotionally demanding. Parenting is a 24/7 responsibility, and it can be exhausting. People recognize that parents, like anyone else, need rest, self-care, and time to attend to their own needs and well-being. These breaks can help parents recharge, reduce stress, and maintain their physical and mental health. A chestfeeding parent often doesn’t need a physical break from their baby but instead needs support with laundry, dishes, meal prep, house cleaning and running errands. Especially in the first few months staying close to baby often feels naturally necessary. The overwhelming part comes with the unsolicited advice, overbearing pressure to have an independent sleeper and to get back into our pre baby clothes. Have you checked out amazing doulas in your area to ensure you gain this type of help?! Please be patient with yourself as you find your “new normal”. Lactation support often involves mental health support. I love that I get to act as your cheerleader, reminding you how truly awesome you are, along the way!

A flange is the funnel part of a pump that makes contact with the breast. Having the proper flange size can impact how your pumping sessions feel as well as have direct effect on your supply/pumping volumes . Ensuring you have the correct fit is very important.  In most cases, the flanges your pump came with kits is likely a size 24mm flange. In all actuality, people usually need a smaller or bigger size. To size yourself take a measuring tape to determine the diameter of your nipple. NOT your areola. Measure your nipple in millimeters at the widest part. Most pumping people find that adding 1-3mm to their nipple size provides the most comfortable and effective flange size. A lactation consultant can be of great help if you're not sure what size flange you need, or if you think you might need a different flange. Have you ever had a well-meaning family member, friend, or pediatrician tell you that you are letting your baby nurse too often? Did they tell you your baby was using you like a pacifier? Did they encourage you to spread out your feeds so that your breast had time to fill up before the next feed? While I never think that anyone intentionally is causing a chestfeedjng dyad to fail, these comments, can absolutely lead to pour outcomes of low weight gain and low supply. In order to make milk, we have to move milk. Think of the breast like an ice machine in your refrigerator. When the ice tray becomes empty, the fridge knows to make more ice. When the ice tray is full, this tells the refrigerator there is no need to make more ice. The same is true for your breast. When your breasts are emptied frequently, your body knows to produce more. When your breast remains full, or hasn’t been fully emptied, this tells your body to not produce more prolactin, which is a milk making hormone. Some people may find that they are at risk for low supply for other reasons, such as gestational diabetics, someone who may have experienced postpartum hemorrhage, or an unplanned caesarean section, someone who’s baby went to special care nursery, and there was a separation and delay in breast-feeding. Placing babies on a Feeding schedule often will lead to low supply because we are not reading our baby and instead we find ourselves reading a clock. If we have a baby who is having difficulty transferring milk at feedings, we may need the support of hand expression or an electric hospital grade double pump to stimulate milk production. When breastfeeding sessions are replaced by bottles of formula or frozen milk, there is a risk of milk supply decreasing unless steps are taken to protect it. Emptying the breast during this time is necessary! Any time you have or suspect low milk supply, I encourage you to seek qualified lactation support. Not everyone who claims to know about breastfeeding gives good, evidence-based advice.

I have a love/hate relationship with shields. Often i will use them as a tool if appropriate but have a difficult time with how they are offered as a “quick fix”. Especially when they are offered to families while still in hospital and prior to a parent’s milk “coming in”. They should be a short term solution which allow for a breastfeeding parent to continue to feed through challenges while the root of the problem is being supported. Nipple shields can be helpful in certain situations, but they also have potential drawbacks: Reduced Milk Transfer: Nipple shields can sometimes impede the baby’s ability to effectively transfer milk, leading to reduced milk supply or slower weight gain. They often lead to shallow latch which can lead to painful latching as well Nipple Confusion: Extended use of nipple shields may cause nipple confusion. A baby can get used to this hard plastic piece that extends into their mouth. However, some babies thrive with this extra palate stimulation so it should be offered by a professional who can help baby learn how to transition off of it Limited Stimulation: Nipple shields may not provide the same level of breast stimulation as direct breastfeeding, which can affect milk supply. Hygiene and Maintenance: Nipple shields require careful cleaning and maintenance to avoid infection risk for both the mother and baby. (Rinse with warm water and dish soap after every use. Sterilize every 24 hrs) Reduced Skin-to-Skin Contact: Nipple shields can reduce the skin-to-skin contact between the mother and baby, which is important for bonding and milk production. In general nipple shields can be a very helpful tool when assessed for their need appropriately. Most cases I see, where they prove helpful, involve a baby with oral restriction such as a tongue tie, premature babies with low tone and occasionally I’ll encourage use to allow nipples to heal if the breastfeeding parent is in too much pain with latching (very rare)

Offering formula doesn't necessarily mean your breastfeeding journey is over. Many parents choose to supplement with formula while continuing to breastfeed. Breastfeeding and formula feeding can coexist, allowing you to tailor your approach to what works best for you and your baby's needs. It's a personal choice, and you can find a balance that suits your family. Advice? if you are needing to offer additional milk or formula due to baby’s weight loss or other medical rationale-then you should pump x 10-20min after a breastfeeding session to ensure your body knows you need to offer extra milk to baby. If you give formula and skip a body feeding session but you want to maintain your milk supply, then you need to probably pump 20-30min each side. It’s all about supply and demand! If you are offering formula but are not concerned if your supply drops then just feed on demand and monitor for engorgement/treat accordingly. If you have specific concerns or questions about breastfeeding, it's a good idea to consult with someone like me; a lactational consult who has experience in infant feeding support!

I’ve always loved babies 💜 To all of those mothering without their mothers. I see you. Holding space for you and the grief that can come when you lose that part of your village.

It's entirely possible to have mixed feelings about chest/breastfeeding. Many parents I’ve worked with have complex emotions when it comes to this topic. Here are a few reasons why someone might feel this way: ❤️ You might feel motivated when you learn of the benefits of breast milk, however, you also could feel touched out and not wanting to be the only one who can settle them and offer nutrients. ❤️ You may want to bond through body feeding. Even if you don't particularly enjoy the physical act, you might value the emotional connection it provides. ❤️ Society often places high expectations on parents to chest feed, which can lead to feelings of guilt or obligation even if you don't personally enjoy it. ❤️ Some parents find breastfeeding physically uncomfortable or painful. If this is you please don’t “power through”. Get help from an IBCLC asap! ❤️ You might be trying to balance your own comfort and well-being with the well-being of your baby, which can be challenging. It's important to remember that there's no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting, and what works best for you and your baby may not be the same as someone else's experience. If you have concerns or questions about breastfeeding, it's a good idea to consult with a lactation consultant who can provide guidance and support tailored to your specific situation. We are here for all of the feels!

Although recovery from a caesarean section commonly takes weeks, you definitely will feel better day today. if you don’t, you should speak to your healthcare provider. What we notice as a challenge for some parents who had a caesarean section is finding a comfortable position. Using pillows to help position baby and side lying in bed, can prove extremely beneficial as it will allow you to not have any extra pressure on your abdomen and it encourages rest. Take it slow and don’t push yourself too hard! Sometimes babies who are delivered via C-section will be separated from their birthing parent. This is when antenatally hand expressed colostrum and skin to skin with another person who cares for baby, can prove extremely beneficial. You can finger feed your baby any previously expressed colostrum while waiting to be reunited after you come back from the recovery room. You will probably find football hold to be the most comfortable The medications you are prescribed in the Hospital for pain will be compatible with breast-feeding. In fact, we encourage you to take medication for any pain you are having as pain can inhibit your letdown response, making milk transfer more difficult for baby. Extra support for the first few weeks after birth can not only be necessary, but can promote breast-feeding success. Feel free to reach out for a prenatal to ensure breast-feeding gets started off on the right foot and/or an initial consult after baby is born so you can reach your feeding goals.

Babies are very rarely allergic to their parent’s breast milk itself. However, they can be sensitive to certain foods or substances that the parent consumes, which can then pass into the breast milk and cause a reaction in the baby. Allergy symptoms in breastfed babies can vary but may include fussiness, eczema, rash, diarrhea, blood in their stool, vomiting, excessive gas, or congestion. If you notice any of these signs, consult an IBCLC and paediatrician to determine if there's an underlying concern such as oral restriction or if changes to your diet might be needed. Tongue tie revisions are generally not considered emergencies in infants because they are not life-threatening conditions. While tongue tie can affect feeding and airway/oral development, it's often manageable with appropriate care and intervention. We say a collaborative approach is always necessary. Our chiropractors, cranial sacral therapists, RMTs, Naturopaths, Physicians, Midwives, Dentists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists are just a few of the people we refer to. This ensures your baby’s body and nervous system are cared for before and after the release. IBCLC involvement allows for you and your baby to be set up for success. Please don’t cut a tie without proper support behind you.

Low intervention birth, breastfeeding friendly providers and encouragers, lots of skin to skin and early latching led to beautiful supply and a successful feeding journey which lasted 4 YEARS.

“My baby is always on my boob!!!!” Baby snacking" is a term used to describe a pattern of frequent, shorter feeding sessions in chest feeding infants. It's a common behavior among breastfed babies and can be entirely normal. Here's some relevant information: Frequent Feeding: body feeding infants often feed more frequently than formula-fed babies because breast milk is digested more rapidly. Babies may feed every 1.5 to 3 hours, or even more frequently during growth spurts or developmental leaps. Shorter Feeding Sessions: Babies may have shorter feeding sessions, especially if they are in need of comfort nursing. These sessions can last just a few minutes but still offer essential nutrition and hydration. Growth and Development: Babies go through growth spurts, developmental leaps, and times of increased emotional or physical needs. It’s not just physical pounds we will see. It’s brain activity too! During these times, they may nurse more frequently as a way to comfort themselves and meet their increased nutritional requirements. Establishing Supply: Frequent nursing in the early weeks helps establish a parent’s milk supply and ensures that the baby gets enough milk to thrive. Responsive Feeding: feeding is a responsive process, meaning that babies feed on demand. They know when they are hungry or need comfort, and parents can respond to those cues by nursing whenever the baby shows signs of hunger or distress. Seek Support: If you have concerns about your baby's feeding patterns or growth, it's essential to consult a lactation consultant to ensure that your baby is getting enough nourishment. Remember that every baby is unique, and feeding patterns can vary widely. As long as your baby is producing an adequate number of wet diapers, gaining weight appropriately, and showing signs of contentment between feeds, there is likely no cause for concern. However, we are always here if you have any worries about your baby's feeding or development.

Got white, sore and blanching nipples? Vasospasm during breastfeeding is a condition where the blood vessels in the nipples constrict, leading to pain and discomfort for the breastfeeding parent. It is also known as Raynaud's phenomenon of the nipple or nipple blanching. During breastfeeding, if the blood vessels in the nipples constrict, it can reduce blood flow to the area, causing pain, throbbing, and a bluish or white discoloration of the nipples. The pain is often described as a burning or stinging sensation and can occur during or after breastfeeding. Vasospasm can be triggered by various factors, including: Cold temperatures: Exposure to cold air or exposure to temperature changes. Poor latch: If the baby doesn't latch properly or there are issues with the baby's oral anatomy, it can lead to nipple trauma and increase the risk of vasospasm. Smoking and caffeine. Smoking can contribute to poor circulation, making a breastfeeding mother more susceptible to vasospasm. Caffeine is known to exacerbate symptoms in many Underlying conditions: Certain conditions, such as Raynaud's syndrome can increase the risk of vasospasm during breastfeeding. Managing vasospasm during feeding often involves addressing the underlying causes and implementing strategies to improve blood flow and reduce discomfort. Here are some steps that may help: Warmth: Applying warmth immediately after a baby unlatches or you stop pumping can help improve blood circulation. This can be done by using warm compresses or taking warm showers. I often advise a heating pad or hand warmers Correct positioning and latch: Ensuring a proper latch and positioning during breastfeeding can help prevent trauma to the nipples and reduce the risk of vasospasm. Seeking assistance from a lactation consultant will prove helpful Keep nipples dry: Moisture can exacerbate vasospasm symptoms. After feeds make sure to gently pat the nipples dry to prevent prolonged moisture exposure. Medications: In persistent cases, a healthcare provider may prescribe medications to help improve blood flow and reduce pain associated with vasospasm. These may include calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine.

Breastfeeding in the summer can come with its own set of challenges and considerations due to the warmer weather. Here are some important points to keep in mind: Hydration: It's crucial for breastfeeding mothers to stay well-hydrated, especially in hot weather. Remember that body feeding can increase your fluid needs, so make it a habit to keep a water bottle nearby. Clothing: Choose lightweight, breathable clothing that allows easy access for breastfeeding. Opt for loose-fitting tops made from natural fabrics like cotton, which can help you and your baby stay comfortable in the heat. Stay cool: Find ways to keep yourself and your baby cool during breastfeeding sessions. You can sit near a fan or air conditioner, use a small handheld fan, or place a cool damp cloth on your neck or forehead. Sun protection: If you're spending time outdoors, protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Apply sunscreen to exposed areas and seek shade whenever possible Baby's comfort: Help your baby stay cool and comfortable while breastfeeding. Dress them in light, breathable clothing and avoid covering them with heavy blankets or fabrics during feeds. Consider finding a shady spot or using a lightweight nursing cover to shield them from direct sunlight. Sweat and moisture: Increased heat can lead to more sweating and moisture, which may increase the risk of skin irritation or fungal infections, such as thrush. Ensure both you and your baby are kept dry and clean. Change nursing pads frequently and consider using nursing-friendly pads made of breathable materials. Increased feedings: Babies may nurse more frequently in hot weather due to increased thirst. Breast milk is not only a source of nutrition but also helps to keep babies hydrated. Pay attention to your baby's cues for feeding, and offer the breast more frequently if needed. Be flexible with positioning: Experiment with different breastfeeding positions to find what works best for you and your baby in warmer weather. Remember, children under 6 months of age do not need extra water to stay hydrated, just chest feed and offer a bit more sessions on those hot summer days!

Every baby is unique, and there can be variations in poop patterns. If you have any concerns about your baby's poop, it is always best to find a IBCLC and physician to rule out problems. Breastfed baby poop: The stool of breastfed infants typically has a mustard-yellow color and a loose or watery consistency. It may resemble seedy or curdled mustard. Breast milk is easily digestible, so breastfed babies tend to have MORE frequent bowel movements. Formula-fed baby poop: Formula-fed babies may have poop that is tan or yellowish-brown in color. The consistency can vary, but it is typically firmer than breastfed baby poop. Formula takes longer to digest, so formula-fed babies may have FEWER bowel movements than breastfed babies. Abnormal poop: Changes in color, consistency, or frequency of a baby's poop can sometimes indicate a problem. For example, if the stool is white, black, bloody, or contains mucus, it is important to consult a healthcare professional. Similarly, if the baby experiences severe diarrhea or constipation, a health care visit is definitely warranted.

When it comes to toddler breastfeeding, it refers to the continuation of breastfeeding beyond the first year of life. This is NORMAL. I hate the term “extended”. Did you know average age for natural weaning is between 5-7 years old? World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend breastfeeding for at least the first year of life, and thereafter as long as mutually desired by the parent and child. Nutritional benefits: Breast milk is a complete source of nutrition for infants and continues to provide valuable nutrients for toddlers. It contains a perfect balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, tailored specifically to meet the changing needs of a growing child. Breast milk also contains antibodies that help protect against illnesses and promote a strong immune system. Emotional bonding: Breastfeeding is not just about nourishment; it also fosters a strong emotional bond between the parent and child. It provides a sense of security, comfort, and closeness, promoting the emotional well-being of both the child and the parent. It’s also extremely helpful as a distraction tool with a busy toddler on an airplane! Weaning: The decision to wean a toddler from body feeding is a personal one and can vary from family to family. Some toddlers naturally wean themselves as they become more independent and consume solid foods. Others may continue to breastfeed for longer periods, with gradually decreasing frequency, until they eventually stop on their own or is parent led. Remember, every breastfeeding journey is unique, and what works for one family may not work for another. The most crucial factor is the well-being and happiness of both the parent and the child. If you have specific concerns or questions about toddler breastfeeding, an international board certified lactation consultant can provide personalized guidance and support. How long did you body feed your child? Who led the weaning process?

Eesh! You can swing on either side of the pendulum over and over and still feel driven and desperate to reach your chestfeeding goals. It can be challenging for many reasons, and while it is a natural process, it doesn't always come easily to every parent and baby. Here are some factors that can contribute to the difficulties associated with breastfeeding: nipple pain, low supply, oral dysfunction, tongue ties, lack of support from partner, bottle preference, prematurity etc. A supportive environment and access to resources like lactation consultants and support groups can greatly assist parents in overcoming feeding challenges. Without proper support, parents may feel overwhelmed or unsure about how to address the difficulties they encounter. It's important to remember that while breastfeeding is beneficial, it is not the only way to nourish and bond with a baby. If a parent faces significant challenges or decides not to breastfeed, there are alternative feeding options available to ensure the baby and parent’s well-being. There isn’t ONE way to nourish your baby. So many grey zones exists among the “ideals”

The truth is we don’t usually recommend a pump until after baby is born because it’s helpful to know the “why” behind the reason you are pumping! Here are some factors to consider when deciding which type of breast pump to use: Frequency of Use: If you plan to pump occasionally or infrequently, a manual breast pump may be sufficient. Manual pumps are generally portable, lightweight, and don't require an electrical power source! Time and Efficiency: Electric breast pumps are generally faster and more efficient compared to manual pumps. They use motorized suction to extract milk, allowing you to pump both breasts simultaneously. This can be beneficial if you need to pump frequently to boost supply, have a busy schedule, or are returning to work. Milk Supply and Comfort: If you have a low milk supply or find it challenging to initiate and maintain milk flow, an electric pump's adjustable suction levels and pumping patterns may be greatly appreciated. Electric pumps can help stimulate multiple letdowns, which can be helpful for establishing and maintaining milk production. Physical Factors: Consider any physical conditions or limitations you may have. Manual pumping requires repetitive hand movements, which can be tiring or uncomfortable for some individuals. Electric pumps offer hands-free pumping options, allowing you to multitask or relax during the pumping session. Sometimes clients will pump hands free while offering top up to their little one via syringe or bottle. Cost: Manual breast pumps are generally less expensive than electric pumps. It's worth noting that some parents choose to have both a manual and an electric breast pump, using each one for different situations or needs. For example, an electric pump may be used at home for regular pumping sessions, while a manual pump can be more convenient for on-the-go or occasional use. Remember to ensure you’ve been sized by an IBCLC to prevent nipple damage or painful pumping leading to low output. Flanges (the part that covers the nipple) come in a variety of sizes!

Spit up: how much is too much and when can we just carry on with the pile of laundry without any additional worrying?!

It is a common misconception that breastfeeding is supposed to be painful or uncomfortable for the body feeding person. However, this is not true. While some periple may experience temporary nipple tenderness or discomfort during the initial days of breastfeeding, ongoing pain is not normal and may indicate an underlying issue. Breastfeeding should not cause severe pain or damage to the nipples. If a parent is experiencing intense pain, cracked or bleeding nipples, or persistent discomfort while breastfeeding, it is important to seek help from a lactation consultant. They can assess the latch and positioning of the baby, as well as check for conditions such as Vasoconstriction or a tongue tie, which can contribute to breastfeeding discomfort. Proper latch and positioning are key factors in ensuring comfortable breastfeeding. The baby should have a wide mouth, with the lips flanged out, and the chin should be touching the breast. Nose slightly tipped up like they are sniffing the air. When the baby is latched correctly, they should be able to effectively remove milk without causing pain or damage to the nipple. It is essential to address any breastfeeding pain or discomfort promptly, as it can have a negative impact on the person’s breastfeeding experience and potentially affect milk supply. Seeking support from a knowledgeable healthcare professional or a lactation consultant can help resolve any issues and ensure a positive breastfeeding journey.

The heat wave is a nice reminder that summer is fast approaching. We highly recommend pre-booking your prenatal and postpartum visits with us to ensure you get the support and expertise you desire/need. Summer months tend to be very busy “baby months” and in the past we’ve had many parents in tears onthe phone due to not being able to be seen promptly. When someone is suffering from acute chest-feeding challenges such as weight gain concerns or damaged nipples they do not want to wait 2-3 weeks to get the help! Please pre-book an appointment and if you end up not needing it we only ask for 24 hours notice to cancel and obtain a full refund so it’s a win-win for you, for us and your beautiful babies. As International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC), our role is to support chest feeding parents and help them overcome any challenges they may face. Low milk supply is a common issue that many experience, and there are several ways we can support you: We evaluate your baby's latch and suckling technique. This will help us determine if there are any underlying issues that could be contributing to low milk supply. We provide guidance on techniques such as breast compression, breast massage, and breast emptying to help increase milk production. We can also offer advice on positioning and latch to ensure your baby is feeding effectively. Think tummy to tummy, elongated neck and “chin to skin” first! Sometimes we may suggest pumping after feeds to trick your body into thinking you have another baby to feed or to ensure your chest knows additional volume is needed. Often we will suggest frequent feeding (8-12x every 24hrs) and ensure you offer both breasts at every feeding. First breast is the main meal. Often the second side is dessert. Most of us always have a tiny bit of room for dessert! Sometimes we might explore the use of herbs and medications but these would never be offered as a first line defence. We often encourage you connect with @clementinenaturalhealth @drcarleyakehurst or @drallypower @brianapeddle to discuss this option. Overall, as an IBCLC, our role is to provide comprehensive support to parents experiencing low milk supply. By offering guidance on breastfeeding techniques, encouraging frequent feeding, and providing emotional support, we can help you increase your confidence that you’ve done “all the things” while maintaining a positive feeding relationship.

We offer expertise in infant feeding which can be valuable for families who may need assistance with a range of issues, from learning to give a bottle to getting their baby back to the breast. By providing in-person support, we offer hands-on guidance and personalized care that can help families feel more confident and empowered in their feeding choices. Whether a family is seeking support with latching, milk supply, pumping, or any other feeding-related concern, our expertise can be an invaluable resource. #tip There is some evidence to suggest that gentle bouncing or rocking can have a calming effect on babies and help to regulate their nervous system. This is because the movement mimics the sensations of being in the womb, which can be soothing for infants. Research has also shown that skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding can have positive effects on a baby's development and well-being. When a baby is held close to their parent’s skin, they can feel their warmth and hear their heartbeat, which can help to regulate their nervous system. So the next time you have a fussy baby who refuses to latch, try bouncing or swaying while skin to skin then attempt a latch with movement. In our experience 9/10 it works like a charm!

When a stressed out parent comes to you and needs help with chest feeding, the offering of formula and the reassurance that “some people just can’t do this” isn’t helpful. Offer a referral to an IBCLC and let that professional navigate their area of expertise. It is then that a breastfeeding dyad can decide what they want to do based on their own capacity and informed choices. Often a little education and support is all that’s required to turn a feeding challenge into a success.

Hard painful lump in your breast? The main reason for clogged ducts is inflammation of the tissue and blood vessels surrounding the milk ducts. This can happen for many reasons but we see it most often when clients are changing their baby's feeding schedule (sleep training) or when a baby has an ineffective shallow latch. Pumping parents often will suffer when their flange pieces are not fitting correctly. Ways to prevent these tender and red spots include feeding or pumping frequently (aim for 8-12x every 24hrs especially during the first 6 weeks postpartum). Remember to attempt different positions to allow your baby to comfortably drain your breast. Do not roughly squeeze your breast or use vigorous massage. This can further damage the tissue and create a worsening inflammation effect! We suggest ice or cool compress in-between feeds, gentle vibration at the site with an electric toothbrush and Advil as needed. Be careful with frequent application of heat as it can cause inflammation to increase. Blocked ducts usually resolve within 24-48 hours. If they don’t you should seek the support of an IBCLC and your primary health care provider ASAP.

A few of my top items I would recommend to every parent who plans to chest feed!

How you feed your newborn is probably one of the first decisions you will make for your child. An IBCLC is a skilled feeding specialist, not just a body feeding expert. We can offer support in weighing the pros and cons of various options so you can make an informed decision. Want to breastfeed? Great! Let’s Latch! Want to pump and bottle feeding? Awesome, we can support that! Want to combo feed with formula or exclusively bottle with formula? No problem, we know how to navigate that as well! No matter your decision, you should feel safe to be honest and you should feel supported in your choices. They are yours to make. Stop asking for permission.

It’s hard to ask for help. It’s hard to watch people body feed when you’re struggling to do so, but want to desperately. Remember you and your baby are learning and both nursing and bottle feeding bonds between parent and baby are incredible. Don’t let one single act of parenthood define how you feel. Your mental health is just as important when deciding to body feed or bottle feed. The reason why having us involved can be so impactful is that you get to make an informed and educated decision instead of being shamed into one. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing in most situations. Feeding goals can be short term and long. Try not to assume that every feeding journey is the same. There are so many factors that lead to the decisions that parents make to nourish their babies. Try not to compare yourself to others. You are genuinely doing what’s best for you and your baby in the moment.

We use this term because it is important for a person to feel safe and supported while feeding their baby. Not all parents who feed their babies with their bodies identify as “mom” or as a woman. Hormones cause the body to create milk. It then travels through the person’s glands and ducts and sprays out of the nipple to feed a baby. It’s up to the parent to decide if this is identified as breastfeeding, chest feeding or body feeding. All families should feel comfortable and confident in their ability to access education and care. Not sure what the family your working with calls it? We laugh and sometimes cry about the highs and lows that come with this parenting journey. People come knowing no one and often leave with a new friend (or many!) Nervous? If my car engine was making odd sounds and my brakes needed to be changed, I wouldn’t go to the car wash to have it looked at. Yes, they work with cars. I just wouldn’t trust their expert opinion on whether my brake pads are safe. So why when we’re having lactation challenges, do we turn to mom groups or even pediatricians? Yes, moms have babies. Yes, pediatricians work with babies. But neither are the experts in infant feeding. This is why so many parents receive conflicting advice from multiple providers. I have met a few (rare) doctors and midwives who have gone and obtained additional training, but truthfully it’s not common because we CANNOT be experts in everything. We all have a place to offer expert advice and support. To become a board certified lactation consultant, you need to take advanced college level coursework specifically in human lactation. You need to spend hundreds to thousands of hours practicing IBCLC work and you have to pass a FOUR HOUR board exam. IBCLCs spend thousands of dollars and years of their lives training to become experts in breasts, babies, and everything feeding related. There is a lot of incorrect information out there that may inadvertently sabotage your breastfeeding journey without meaning to. Collaboratively, we can together offer amazing support and options so you meet your own individual goals. @tracytoday

Here are some tips and updates when you’ve been suffering with mastitis. Mastitis is an inflammation of breast tissue that, if left untreated, could lead to a bacterial infection. It often is associated with oversupply or ineffective removal of milk through latching/pumping challenges. We used to advise parents to dangle feed on all fours, apply heat before a feed and cold in between. We advised clients to fully drain the breast at every feed and thought a clog was the reason for the blockage. BUT when we know better we do better! So here is the updated evidence based recommendations from ABA to support you when you have symptoms of mastitis. Feed on demand and please don’t pump and feed to fully empty this only worsens the oversupply. Use ice instead of heat for plugged ducts and inflammatory mastitis. Advil or other anti inflammatory/analgesic medications can prove beneficial. Consider gentle massage! Gone are the days of aggressively trying to unclog a breast in the shower. This can actually make the inflammation significantly worse. Stay hydrated and rest whenever possible. Not all cases of mastitis need antibiotics but if your fever persist or symptoms are worsening after 24hrs you should be assessed by your primary health care provider. REMEMBER you should continue to breastfeed throughout. Your milk is safe and NOT infected.

Something we did in clinic today included creating a safe place to discuss exclusive pumping instead of carrying on with a breastfeeding journey. We assisted a baby in learning how to take a bottle, using chin support and bouncing on an exercise ball. Did you know that your lactation consultants think of you even when we’re not in clinic or having a home visit with you? We do. I can assure you. We want to see you happy and thriving. @tracytoday

Because breastfeeding may come with many ups and downs, a feeding specialist like an IBCLC can be invaluable. While both parent and baby are learning, a lactation consultant can also serve as an essential source of emotional support for new parents who may be struggling. Everyone on your medical team has a niche. Body feeding and bottle feeding is ours. When should you see an IBCLC? Weight gain concerns, painful latch, colic symptoms, open mouth sleeping posture, lip blisters on baby, low supply, needing to top up after feeds, pumping, returning to work, weaning, starting solid foods, understanding sleep and feeding patterns. The list goes on and on!

Spent the morning doing a free body feeding prep class @belliescommunity . This space is so beautiful and I’m so happy to get to spend time there every 4-6 weeks doing “donation encouraged” classes!

Did you you know that a non birthing parent can produce breastmilk? A combination of frequent chest stimulation and medication is often used to support their ability to make milk. It is important that any person who plans to induce lactation talks to a IBCLC and their midwife/doctor to allow for appropriate counseling and screening, and the setting of realistic goals. The more time you have to prep your breasts, prior to baby’s arrival the better! The hormones responsible for lactation are made by the pituitary gland, so any adult human, regardless of age, medical history or gender can potentially lactate. An exception includes people who have had a mastectomy. Postmenopausal and assigned male at birth people may need hormone treatments due to higher levels of testosterone and lower levels of estrogen and progesterone. Connect if you want to learn more!

Breastfeeding gives babies a great start in their life. It helps prevent asthma, eczema, childhood leukaemia and ear aches to name a few. But it’s not just good for babies—it’s good for parents, too. Parents who breastfeed lower their risk of breast cancer. Most, who breastfeed, experience hormonal changes during lactation that delay their menstrual periods. This reduces a person’s lifetime exposure to hormones like estrogen, which can promote breast cancer cell growth. Another amazing reason to seek help and reach your feeding goals!

So often we’re told to “Just trust your gut,” but what does it actually mean and more importantly, how do you do it? The influx of professionals and people who we admire begin to cloud our own intuition. “Often, the person who has the greatest power to eclipse or cloud your gut instinct is a loved one or authority figure whose love or approval you wish to win over, for example, a parent, significant other, teacher” or midwife/nurse/doctor- onelove Advice- it’s everywhere. We can’t avoid it. We’re lost in a sea of it all. Even though there is a lot of good information out there, the contrasting viewpoints and really opinionated voices (that seem to be at our finger tips) seem to drown out our own gut-feeling. We need to listen to that little voice and surround ourselves with health care providers who LISTEN and truly individualize care without their own agenda. Your body, your baby, your choice.

Tip? Allow your breast to touch your baby’s face before even trying to latch. This will help stop your little one from putting their hands in their mouth first. Try not to tuck your baby’s hands under his body or swaddle him while body feeding. This can disorient him and cause frustration. When you’re eating what would it feel like to have your hands tied behind your back? You would most likely feel imbalanced and find it difficult to enjoy your meal. Babies need their hands to keep them stable and they kneed/caress the chest to promote oxytocin which increased milk flow! Help your baby place each arm around the sides of your breast, like they are hugging it! It really will promote a successful latch and feed!

Office visits today. To sit and be present with someone is something I truly value. We definitely reach lactation and feeding goals here but we also talk life, birth, relationships and the overwhelming anxiety that can come from becoming parents.

Let’s spread some love to families struggling right now. They are feeling so frustrated and hopeless. Nipples are hurting, babies are fussy and everyone is feeling exhausted! Let’s have real conversations that give parents an opportunity to express concerns, both about their own ability to breastfeed and the societal pressures they might be facing. IBCLCs can offer advice and provide resources tailored to each parent’s needs but often the icing on the cake is hearing someone else’s success story. If you want to share yours, comment below!

What a privilege it has been to walk along side you, to hold space for the celebrations and the reevaluations. To listen to your birth stories and overcome feeding challenges. When it’s Sunday night and you are having all the feels. I love how resilient and powerful parents are in the midst of exhaustion. It doesn’t mean it’s not hard and all consuming work but oh man it can be worth it. A trained and experienced IBCLC will know to use a multidisciplinary approach. SIDE LYING is one of my favourite ways to help parents and babies feed. You and your baby lie on your sides facing each other. Your baby's chest should face your chest, and your baby's mouth should be level with your nipple. Often scissor hold can be helpful to encourage baby to open wide. Pull your baby close. In this position, you can cradle your baby's back with your forearm. Support yourself with pillows behind your back. Be careful not to surround your baby with loose clothing or bedding. It’s a whole new way to “Netflix and chill”

When you follow accounts that make you question or feel shame in your choices as a parent, it’s time to just say no. It’s okay to go against mainstream ideas regarding infant and child expectations and dig deep to understand their behaviour. While you’re at it, feel free to explore the triggers you feel when your child eats, sleeps or acts/responds in a way that upsets you. I recommend @awesomebirth_and_counselling and @nicole.s.chambers for postpartum and parenting/relationship reflection through therapy. @mrs.monicamaddison is also a wonderful advocate for inclusive environments and helping others understand why children do what they do. She often gives tangible ways their “grown ups” can support healthy and happy development in ALL children.
